Sermon Divisions:
We, sinners, have a tendency to rebel against God, in our desire to be independent God, to have complete control of ourselves, and do whatever we want without restraints.
Rebelling against God---a state of departure and distance from God---is sin (Genesis 3; Romans 1:12).
Before reconciliation with God and restoration, (true) repentance must come first. True repentance is a realization from the sinners that apart from God, there is no hope (Ephesians 2:12, 2 Timothy 2:25-34).
By the grace of God, through Christ’ death on the cross, we have been fully restored, made good again before God, our Creator. Through Christ, we are clothed in His robe of righteousness (Isaiah 61:10) and have received the Holy Spirit and adopted to sonship (Romans 8:15; Ephesians 1:5).
Reflection Questions:
Have you ever rebelled against your parents and their authority? Against God?
Read Isaiah 61:10, Ephesians 1:5, & Ephesians 6:15. What do these passage imply regarding what we’d receive once we have been forgiven for our sins and transgressions and have truly received Christ in our lives? What’s the connection with what the prodigal son received in the parable?
How can the parable of the prodigal son help us in terms of preparing our hearts as we’re approaching Good Friday and Easter in the coming month?
